NWSA volume growth trend continues in August

The Northwest Seaport Alliance handled a total of 305,071 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), an increase of 10.4% compared to August 2020. Full imports grew 3.3%, while full exports decreased 6.2%.

Year-to-date volumes improved 17.1% to 2,472,838 TEUs, with full imports growing 26% and full exports declining 10.9%.

Terminal 5 construction continues with rebar placement, fender removal, and installation of pile caps. Terminal 5 is expected to be operational at the start of 2022. When finished, the 185-acre, on-dock rail terminal will handle the largest vessels in the transpacific trade.

Domestic volumes grew 8.8% vs. YTD 2020. Alaska volumes saw a 5.9% increase while Hawaii volumes grew 23%.

Other cargo stats:

Breakbulk YTD August 2021 cargo volumes grew 31.6% to 236,853 metric tons.

Auto volumes were 115,441 units, up 25.7% over YTD August 2020.
