Numbers at Munich Airport increase by 17 percent to 37 million

Jan 11, 2024

The ongoing positive development at Munich Airport is clearly reflected in the traffic figures for 2023. Passenger numbers rose by five million year-on-year to a total of 37 million. With its current passenger volume, Munich Airport has reached around 80% of the record level from the pre-crisis year 2019. The number of aircraft movements rose by six percent compared to 2022 to more than 300,000 take-offs and landings. The seat load factor reached a record level of 81.3 percent, thereby exceeding 80 percent for the first time since the airport opened.

In 2023, the focus of passenger development was on traffic originating from or ending at Munich. This rose by 22 percent compared to the previous year. The number of transfer passengers, which is important for hub traffic, also saw double-digit growth of 11 percent.

With a total of 219 destinations in 64 countries, Bavaria’s aviation hub now has excellent links with the global route network once again. In 2023, the airport was regularly served by 99 airlines, nine of which were active solely in air freight.

Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport: "The strong growth in passenger numbers in 2023 shows how well the aviation industry is recovering in Munich. This positive development is a sign of the high demand for air travel among the public and the business community alike."

The strong traffic development at Munich Airport also had a positive effect on air freight. In 2023, freight volumes rose by seven percent to a total of around 280,000 metric tons.
