Ideal Transportation Company, Inc. a 100% woman-owned business, proudly established in a predominantly male industry. Founded and led by Nadine DiGiulio, who continues to own and oversee operations to this day, Ideal has stood out for nearly five decades as a leader in New England trucking and logistics.

On September 8, 1975, the company moved its first container during a period when the transportation industry was under the regulation of the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC).

On October 6, 1975, Ideal became a Massachusetts corporation and secured full legal authority through the Department of Public Utilities to operate as a regulated trucking company, and in December, Certificate Number 5056 was officially transferred to Ideal Transportation Company, Inc., then operating from 2 Dooling Circle in Peabody, Massachusetts. At that time, Ideal operated exclusively out of the Port of Boston with just two tractors and a small but dedicated customer base.

By 1978, Nadine recognized the need to expand operations to the Ports of New York and New Jersey. That same year, she also obtained licensing to transport alcoholic beverages. In 1979, the company was proudly serving major steamship lines, moving containers throughout New England for both imports and exports.

With tireless determination, Nadine pursued additional certifications to enhance the company’s capabilities. In 1981, after completing a rigorous process, Ideal became an authorized U.S. Customs Bonded Carrier. This milestone, along with expanding port operations, grew the company’s fleet from two to twelve vehicles.

In 1985, the decision was made to establish a permanent home for the company. With the support of a Small Business Administration (SBA) 503 loan, construction began on a new terminal at 17 Oak Street in Peabody. By April 1987, the facility was completed and became the company’s official headquarters. Soon after, Ideal successfully obtained authorization to operate the location as a U.S. Customs Bonded Container Yard (CY), further strengthening its role in international trade logistics.

Nadine’s story is especially inspiring as a woman leading and succeeding in what was, and still largely remains, a male-dominated industry. Her role as the sole owner firmly established Ideal as a woman-owned enterprise, positioning the company as a pioneer for diversity in trucking and logistics long before such recognition was common.

Today, Ideal Transportation operates 20 tractors, providing container hauling services from multiple ports to importers and exporters across New England. The company now serves more than 150 customers, including national food distributors, shoe manufacturers, and other leading businesses. Nadine continues to oversee daily operations with the same dedication she has shown for nearly 50 years. Her leadership, combined with a loyal team of employees—many from the Peabody area—has allowed Ideal to thrive while remaining deeply rooted in the local community.

While the company has expanded its reach to various ports, its heart remains with the Port of Boston and the City of Peabody. Nadine has always emphasized supporting local vendors and employing local talent, ensuring that Ideal’s growth continues to benefit the community it has called home for half a century.
