MOL Chief Sustainability Officer Hikima speaks at UN Ocean Conference

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced that Chief Sustainability Officer, Toru Hikima, participated in a panel discussion at the 2025 UN Ocean Conference held in Nice, France, from June 9-13 to support marine conservation and the implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He introduced MOL’s ideas and initiatives for the conservation of the marine environment and ecosystems.

MOL, as a leading company in the drive toward achieving net zero GHG emissions, has been actively involved in international initiatives to promote broad collaboration not only within the shipbuilding and marine industries but also across other sectors. Drawing upon these experiences, it co-hosted a panel discussion during the event with the World Economic Forum and others on the theme of “Promoting a Renewable Ocean Economy” as an official side event of UNOC. While the participating panelists expressed opinions that efforts that consider both biodiversity and climate change, as well as further research and data, are needed, Hikima remarked, “GHG emissions from the shipping industry are substantial. Given the potential adverse impacts of climate change on the marine environment, including ocean acidification and rising sea temperatures, climate change countermeasures remain crucial for the conservation of marine ecosystems. On the other hand, further scientific research and technological development are necessary to reduce impacts such as underwater noise.” He underscored MOL’s ongoing commitment to strong measures to reduce GHG emissions from shipping and to lead the industry from the perspective of protecting the marine environment.

MOL established the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2” and is pursuing environmentally friendly initiatives in line with five strategies, including the adoption of clean alternative fuels. Through these contributions to the sustainable development of society, preservation of nature and for all life in the next generation, MOL will continue to create a prosperous future from the blue oceans.
