Maersk construction, one step closer

Mar 17, 2023

The Technical and Environmental Committee in Copenhagen municipality has approved the necessary changes to the local plan, which can ensure the expansion of Maersk's headquarters on the Esplanade with an office building of approx. 26,000 square meters at the address Amaliegade 44. But the process is not over yet.

In addition to the new office building, which will provide space for 800 employees, Maersk will create an open space - an urban space facing the water - with a café and water art.

The plan was approved despite objections from e.g. The Copenhagen Museum, which has previously called it "interesting that the Koppel building now wants to be demolished, where it was previously premiered".

The Koppel building is the existing building, which was bought by Maersk in 2020 for DKK 420 million. DKK, but which, according to Maersk, is not suitable for the purpose - and which also contains a number of toxic building materials.

Another theme has been whether the new construction will reduce the possibility that the area - Frederiksstad with Amalienborg - will be included in UNESCO's world heritage list in a future scenario.

"It is UNESCO's World Heritage Committee that makes this decision, but it is, however, the agency's assessment that the construction, by virtue of its height and design, interferes with the integrity of the area," the Palaces and Culture Agency has noted.

After approval by the Citizens' Representation, the proposed plan and an associated environmental report will be sent for consultation for eight weeks.

"Based on the results of the consultation, the administrations will prepare a recommendation for the final adoption of the planning proposals. The proposal is expected to be submitted to the Citizens' Representation at the end of 2023," says the minutes from the committee meeting on 13 March.
