LATAM Cargo Group and Andes Integración Logística achieve reduced carbon footprint

Mar 18, 2026

In a context where CO₂ emissions management is gaining increasing relevance in international logistics, LATAM Cargo Group and Andes Integración Logística have completed the first premium salmon air shipment with a reduced carbon footprint for the salmon exporter AquaChile. The operation, which transported cargo from Chile to the United States, was made possible through the allocation of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) using the Book & Claim model.

Executed on March 7, 2026, this operation marks a milestone in the industry's decarbonization strategy. It represents the first time a certified emissions reduction has been integrated into an international shipment of premium salmon using the Book & Claim model in South America.

The initiative considered the allocation of more than 350 liters of SAF by LATAM Cargo Group. The environmental benefits were accredited to the shipment operation through Book & Claim, a mechanism that allows climate commitments to be channeled into concrete, verifiable, and traceable solutions, even when the fuel is not physically carried on the specific flight.

Measurable and traceable impact

The shipment consisted of more than 3 tons of premium salmon and achieved a certified 10% reduction in CO₂ emissions. This is equivalent to a reduction of 0.6 tons of CO₂ associated with the air transport of this specific operation.

The SAF utilized—produced from animal waste residues—enables emissions reduction of approximately 74.7% compared to conventional fossil fuels, according to the calculation methodologies employed.

“This shipment demonstrates that the decarbonization of air cargo is possible when the entire logistics chain works in tandem," commented Cristina Oñate, Product Sustainability Manager at LATAM Cargo Group. "Our goal is to continue expanding access to concrete, traceable, and verifiable solutions based on the use of SAF, so that more South American exporters can reduce the carbon footprint of their international shipments”.

For his part, Jan-Henrik Hertel, Director of Processes at Andes Integración Logística, noted: “This agreement reinforces our role as a strategic freight forwarder. We do not just manage transport from origin to destination; we accompany our clients in fulfilling their sustainability goals. Furthermore, we are proving that the logistics chain can be an active tool for decarbonization”.

AquaChile highlighted the importance of "being part of initiatives that allow us to continue advancing toward more sustainable logistics, especially in export operations to markets as relevant as the United States. These types of solutions contribute to strengthening a more efficient chain and incorporating concrete environmental improvements”.

Driving the decarbonization of air cargo

The successful execution of this milestone reflects how synergistic capabilities deliver tangible climate impact. LATAM Cargo Group provides a tangible solution for clients to integrate climate management into their operations—enabling the use of SAF under a traceable and verifiable scheme like Book & Claim—while Andes Integración Logística, through its strategic CaRe initiative, articulates the operational and environmental implementation to ensure correct execution and traceability of the reduction.

With AquaChile as a pioneer exporter, this collaboration between the airline, forwarder, and client demonstrates that decarbonization in air cargo does not depend on isolated efforts, but on alliances that convert commitments into measurable and scalable results across corridors to and from South America. Furthermore, this action holds strategic relevance for Chile, proving that the export industry can move toward more sustainable logistics without compromising service quality.

Simultaneously, it sends a clear signal regarding the importance of boosting the development of sustainable aviation fuels in the region. As demand for solutions like SAF grows, so do the opportunities to accelerate this market and, in the future, enable Chile’s participation in its production.

Rather than a one-off action, this initiative marks the beginning of a transition aimed at progressively expanding the use of SAF across different products and routes, particularly toward demanding markets such as the United States and Europe.
