In one of the first in-person industry events since 2019, the Intermodal EXPO brought over 1,100 leaders together in Long Beach, California to discuss ongoing intermodal supply chain challenges, network with colleagues and view the latest industry products and services.

Against a backdrop of the Port of Long Beach, Dr. Noel Hacegaba, IANA’s chairman and deputy director of the Port, kicked off EXPO by sharing a proclamation from Mayor Robert Garcia and the City of Long Beach recognizing Sept. 13 as “Intermodal Day”. Congressman Alan Lowenthal, in his welcoming remarks, noted the contributions of the intermodal industry to the United States economy, especially over the last 18 months.

Intermodal EXPO’s first General Session, “Inside Intermodal”, was led by John Larkin of Clarendon Capital and featured Evan Armstrong, Armstrong & Associates; Tim Denoyer, ACT Research; Larry Gross, Gross Transportation Consulting; and Lars Jensen, Vespucci Maritime, who shared their unparalleled expertise on current industry conditions and key observations for the future. This session also included the presentation of the intermodal industry’s highest honor, the Silver Kingpin Award, to Jeff Brashares in recognition of his lifetime contributions to the advancement of intermodal.

The second General Session, “Intermodal’s Digital Coming of Age”, examined the current digital transformation of the industry and the future role and impacts of specific technologies on intermodal operations. Panelists included Ken Buenker, Coyote Logistics; Jim Mullen, TuSimple; and Mark Yeager, Redwood Logistics and was moderated by Remi Diebes, REMPREX.

The trade show component of EXPO featured an Exhibit Hall with over 90 companies showcasing their products and services that keep the industry moving forward.

Plans are already underway for Intermodal EXPO 2022 to be held in Long Beach, September 11-13.
