Halifax Port Authority announces Port Community Liaison Committee

Jun 25, 2020

The Halifax Port Authority is creating a committee for improved communication between the Port and the larger public.

The Port Community Liaison Committee (PCLC) is an ongoing mechanism for communication and engagement between the Halifax Port Authority and the larger Halifax community. The purpose of the committee is to foster meaningful communication and information sharing between the Port and members of the public, and to solicit feedback from those affected by port operations and projects.
The PCLC is independently chaired and comprised of individuals who represent a broad mix of port city citizens with emphasis on experience, insight and diversity. Sara Colburne, who is currently Managing Director of Engage Nova Scotia, has graciously agreed to act as Chair of the Port Community Liaison Committee.
“One of my goals is to foster a greater sense of collaboration amongst our traditional port partners and the larger community,” said Cpt. Allan Gray, President and CEO, Halifax Port Authority. “We are deliberately trying to find those groups who do not fall under the current Port of Halifax umbrella. We want to hear from them, learn from them and make sure they are aware of what is happening with the Port of Halifax, now and in the future.”
Being able to bring new people together is one of the reasons PLCL Chair Sara Colburne is excited to be taking on this role. “There is so much happening right now with our city and our port,” she explained. “I think that it is very important that we all work together to find new ways of sharing information and ideas so that we collectively put ourselves in the best position to achieve positive and meaningful growth, and to build stronger relationships.”
“This was an idea that was raised by Cpt. Gray when we were interviewing him for the role of President and CEO,” said Thomas J. Hayes, Board Chair, Halifax Port Authority. “Big ships are important, but the Port of Halifax is about so much more than that. That’s why we want to hear from those who have backgrounds, experience and perspective different than traditional port users.”
The Port Community Liaison Committee will initially be comprised of up to 15 individuals who represent a broad mix of port city citizens with emphasis on experience, insight and diversity. Captain Gray and Ms. Colburne will be reaching out to candidates who fit the criteria. Those interested in learning more can visit https://www.portofhalifax.ca/about-us/port-community/. The first meeting of the PCLC is expected to take place sometime in August.
