GT Wings partners with A2O Manufacturing & KS Composites for cutting-edge AirWing™ technology

Aug 05, 2024

GT Wings (“GT”) has announced the selection of A2O Manufacturing ( “A2OM”) in collaboration with KS Composites (“KS”) as the composites manufacturer for its innovative AirWing technology. The AirWing, a cutting-edge wind propulsion system designed for commercial shipping, promises to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by up to 30%. This compact and efficient wingsail is suitable for both retrofit and new build applications, helping ship owners comply with stringent EU and IMO environmental regulations while generating a positive return on investment through significant fuel savings.

The first installation of the AirWing, incorporating KS Composites' advanced materials, will take place on a Carisbrooke Shipping 124-meter general cargo vessel in Q4 2024. With performance validation, GT anticipates significant commercial interest. GT, A2OM and KS look forward to a long-term collaboration, with LOIs in place for the delivery of multiple units in 2025.

Comments from Leadership

GT Wings CEO and founder, George Thompson, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "Partnering with A2OM & KS Composites is an exciting next step towards the validation of the AirWing. Their expertise in composite materials aligns perfectly with our design pedigree and engineering excellence. We look forward to a long-term partnership that can significantly impact the decarbonisation of the global shipping fleet."

A2OM CEO Nigel Allman is enthused about the partnership “bringing together our knowledge of advanced manufacturing and structural monitoring alongside our partner KS Composites creates a phenomenal opportunity to deliver a sustainable advanced solution in the marine sector and to bring the AirWingto life for George and the GT Wings team.

KS Composites Managing Director, Jamie Smith, shared this excitement, "We are thrilled to collaborate with A2OM & GT Wings on this pioneering project. The AirWing represents a significant advancement in wind propulsion technology, and we are proud that our expertise and materials will play a critical role in its development. This partnership underscores our dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility."

GT’s unique selling point lies in its patented airflow technology, delivering industry-leading thrust from a compact unit. This smaller footprint allows the AirWing to be used on a wide range of vessels with minimal impact on cargo operations. The company aims to make its products a must have for shipowners seeking to meet stricter regulatory standards.
