Fraport traffic figures – June 2023: Frankfurt Airport welcomes over 200,000 daily passengers again for the first time since the pandemic

Jul 13, 2023

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed some 5.6 million passengers in June 2023, an increase of 11.3 percent compared to the same month last year. For the first time since the pandemic, Germany’s largest airport served more than 200,000 daily passengers again. FRA surpassed this figure on three days during the month of June, with the summer travel peak still ahead. For comparison: during the entire year 2022, FRA’s passenger volume exceeded the 180,000-mark per day only five times. However, passenger traffic in June 2023 was still 15.6 percent below the pre-crisis level achieved in June 2019.

From January to June 2023, a total of about 26.9 million passengers used Frankfurt Airport – an increase of 29.1 percent year-on-year. Compared to the same period of 2019, FRA’s passenger traffic was still down by 20.1 percent.

Dr. Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport AG, said: “While we are delighted about the ongoing recovery in passenger demand, we remain aware of the challenges arising from this development. We are working intensively with all our process partners to prepare for the upcoming summer travel season. The overall orderly operations in the first half of the year give us grounds for cautious optimism. The numerous measures we have taken are already proving effective. Across the Group, our mainly leisure-dominated airports worldwide continue to recover faster. While our Greek airports have already exceeded pre-crisis levels, we also expect other Group airports to recover to nearly pre-crisis passenger traffic as the year progresses.”

Cargo volumes in Frankfurt continued to decline in June 2023, reflecting the overall economic slowdown. With 160,047 metric tons, FRA’s cargo throughput (comprising airfreight and airmail) remained 4.6 percent below the level of June 2022. Aircraft movements, in contrast, climbed by 8.4 percent year-on-year to 38,885 takeoffs and landings. Likewise, accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) expanded by 8.4 percent year-on-year to around 2.4 million metric tons.

The airports in Fraport’s international portfolio also continued to report ongoing traffic growth. Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia registered 128,534 passengers in June 2023, up 25.5 percent year-on-year. Combined traffic at the Brazilian airports of Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA) rose to 1.1 million passengers, up 12.6 percent. Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru recorded about 1.7 million passengers, a rise of 13.8 percent. Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports saw overall traffic advance by 13.7 percent in the reporting month to some 5.0 million passengers. On the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, traffic at the Twin Star airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) soared by 30.5 percent year-on-year to 550,641 passengers. Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera served 4.5 million passengers, up 15.9 percent.
