Finnlines Sweden – Poland route strengthens the security of supply in the Baltic Sea region

Finnlines has operated the Sweden–Poland route for one year and the connection has already established a solid position in the market. The new connection complements the company’s service and route network, while also strengthening the security of supply among the Baltic Sea countries.

The shipping company Finnlines launched a new ro-pax service between Malmö, Sweden and Świnoujście, Poland in April 2024. Since then, the company has maintained daily departures in both directions, transporting various types of freight, private passengers and professional drivers.

”Expectations have been well met. The new connection between these two ports complements our service and route network exceptionally well. At the same time, we have also improved our services at the ports,” says Antonio Raimo, Line Manager at Finnlines.

The terminal area in Świnoujście was expanded to meet customer needs, and in Malmö, passenger facilities were upgraded to accommodate the growing volumes.

“The prospects are very promising, although the war in Ukraine is limiting the full potential of the connection between Western Poland and Scandinavia. Finnlines is considering deploying an additional vessel on the route as soon as market conditions allow,” says Antonio Raimo.

Finnlines has reached its target of the number of freight units carried weekly and private travel picks up during the summer and holiday season. There is also a growing interest among groups to travel with Finnlines.

“We are strengthening our focus on passenger travel, and the significant increase in traveller numbers clearly reflects the growing interest. In 2024, nearly one million passengers travelled with us on our four passenger routes, and this positive development signals a promising and exceptionally busy summer season ahead. Finnlines connects the Baltic Sea countries and is a major player in Swedish sea transport

Finnlines has a long and solid history in Sweden. The company has operated on the Sweden–Finland route for around 35 years and on the Sweden–Germany route for over 20 years. The newly launched Sweden–Poland route, which began operations in 2024, has successfully established its position after one year of service.

The Sweden–Poland connection serves both freight and passenger traffic, supporting trade, logistics, and tourism across the Baltic Sea region. Finnlines’ routes to and from Sweden also play an important role in Sweden’s security of supply, as four of the company’s freight-passenger vessels operating from Sweden sail under the Swedish flag. In addition, the company’s two newest vessels operate between Sweden and Finland, further strengthening Finnlines’ significance for Swedish industry.

The ro-pax vessel operating on the Sweden–Poland route provides smooth connections to Świnoujście and Western Pomeranian region in Poland, as well as to Malmö in Sweden and further on to Skåne, Denmark, and Norway. The vessel operates daily, departing in the evenings from Świnoujście and in the mornings from Malmö. Onboard services include a traditional Finnish sauna, buffet restaurant, bar, children’s play area, and shop.
