EU expands access for Moldovan fruit exports, strengthening trade ties and market stability

Jul 25, 2025

The European Union has officially announced the expansion of access for agricultural products from the Republic of Moldova, particularly fruits — a move that consolidates the country’s position as a competitive and reliable supplier on the EU market.

The measure, which increases tariff quotas for plums, apples, table grapes, and cherries, comes as recognition of Moldova’s growing role in the European horticultural supply chain. These products represent some of the most important outputs of Moldova’s agriculture and are widely appreciated for their quality and compliance with European standards.

According to recent international trade data, the Republic of Moldova ranks among the world’s top 20 exporters of plums, walnuts, cherries, apricots, rapeseed, apples, and grapes. With an extended production season and favorable climate, Moldova also boasts the highest vineyard density in the world, enhancing its reputation as a hub for high-quality fruit production.

“The expansion of quotas for Moldovan fruits reflects both the quality of our production and the trusted partnership with the European Union. Republic of Moldova ranks 4th in cherry exports, 6th in plum exports, 13th in apple exports, and 18th in grape exports, confirming its role as a competitive player on international markets. This new trade framework provides our producers with stability and access to a major distribution channel.”

stated Natalia Bejan, Director of the Invest Moldova Agency.

The liberalization of exports within the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) under the EU-Moldova Association Agreement enables producers to respond more efficiently to market demands, reduce trade barriers, and scale their operations sustainably.

In 2024, edible fruits and nuts represented 6.57% of Moldova’s total exports, with over 266,000 tons shipped—mainly to the European Union. Moldova Fruct, the national association of fruit producers and exporters, welcomed the decision:

“We express our gratitude to all institutions that actively supported our efforts toward the permanent liberalization of fresh fruit exports and we remain committed to promoting free and sustainable access to the EU market, in line with the Association Agreement.”

  • Bridge Platform – a B2B matchmaking tool connecting Moldovan exporters with major European distributors;
  • Export Missions – business delegations facilitating direct partnerships in target markets;
  • Grant Program for Business Associations – financial support for export promotion, capacity building, and market intelligence activities.

Invest Moldova Agency reaffirms its commitment to empowering Moldovan producers and exporters through proactive policies and partnerships that unlock new market opportunities and drive sustainable economic development.
