Drewry Port Throughput Indices for September 2022

The Drewry Container Port Throughput Indices are a series of calendar adjusted volume growth/decline indices based on monthly throughput data for a sample of over 235 ports worldwide, representing over 75% of global volumes. The base point for the indices is January 2012 = 100.

Drewry’s latest assessment - September 2022

• The Drewry Global Container Port Throughput Index dropped 2.1% MoM in July 2022 but was 3.3% higher YoY. The performance was bolstered by the recovery in traffic volumes at Shanghai following the lifting of Covid lockdowns in June, but this was insufficient to offset the wider downturn in port handling levels.
• The Drewry Greater China Port Throughput Index recorded an 8.4% YoY increase in July 2022 - but despite a 0.5 mteu MoM uplift in volumes at Shanghai the regional index dipped 1.3% below the June 2022 level.
• From our eight regional indices, Latin America was the only region recording a MoM gain with the index climbing 4.4% MoM to reach 132 points. The 13 Brazilian ports within the Latin American Index saw volumes increase by an average 13.4% MoM / 5.8% YoY in July 2022. Santos’ throughput increased by more than 50,000 teu over June 2022, and Paranagua and Rio de Janeiro also posted strong gains.
