Delta Air Lines breaks ground on JFK Terminal after pandemic delay

Delta Air Lines Inc. broke ground on a $1.5 billion redevelopment of Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday after the pandemic delayed the project by nearly two years.

The development is part of an $18 billion plan set forth by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey to transform one of the busiest airports in the U.S., which handles nearly 62 million passengers a year. It will add 10 gates to Terminal 4.

The groundbreaking follows an announcement on Monday by New York Governor Kathy Hochul for a $9.5 billion revamp of Terminal 1, which is being financed through a public-private partnership with investors Carlyle Group, JLC Infrastructure and Ullico.

“It’s a signal of confidence to let the world know that despite some setbacks, we see a clear path, a clear runway for the future,” Hochul said at a briefing at JFK on Wednesday.
