CMA CGM low sulfur surcharge | Asia <> Med

Apr 09, 2025

As part of ongoing efforts to reduce air pollution from ships and improve air quality, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced new environmental regulations.

Starting May 1, 2025, the Mediterranean Sea will be designated as an Emission Control Area (ECA) implementing stricter controls to limit sulfur emissions from ships operating in this zone.

In compliance with these new regulations, CMA CGM will introduce a Low Sulfur Surcharge for all shipments transiting through the Mediterranean ECA zone. This surcharge covers the additional costs associated with using lower sulfur fuels and adopting other measures to meet the stringent environmental standards.

The Low Sulfur Surcharge applicable to Asia <> Mediterranean shipments will be as follows:

From April 21st, 2025, B/L date

- Origin range: From Asia

- Destination range: To the Mediterranean

- Amount: USD 20 per TEU, on top of Basic Ocean Freight

- Payment: As per freight

From May 1st, 2025, B/L date

- Origin range: From the Mediterrranean

- Destination range: To Asia, Middle East Gulf & Red Sea

- Amount: USD 10 per TEU, on top of Basic Ocean Freight

- Payment: As per freight

The introduction of the ECAs IMO Adjustment Factor aligns with new regulatory requirements aimed at reducing sulfur emissions and protecting the environment. By adhering to these regulations, we are contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future.
