CHIPS for America’s vision for the National Semiconductor Technology Center

Apr 27, 2023

This week, CHIPS for America released a paper outlining the vision and strategy for a National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC), a key component of the research and development program established by President Biden’s bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act. The NSTC will work with industry, academia, and other partners to establish a network of technical centers across the country to foster nationwide research and innovation--advancing U.S. competitiveness and technological leadership.

Accelerate American Innovation

The paper, A Vision and Strategy for the National Semiconductor Technology Center, lays out how the NSTC will accelerate American innovation to ensure we are advancing America’s global leadership in developing technologies of the future.

The strategy paper outlines the NSTC’s three high-level goals to:

1 Extend America’s leadership in semiconductor technology

2 Reduce the time and cost of moving from design idea to commercialization

3 Build and sustain a semiconductor workforce development ecosystem

The NSTC’s programs are intended for the entire ecosystem: fabless companies, research institutions, community colleges, state and local governments, national labs, foundries, integrated device manufacturers, equipment vendors, materials suppliers, labor unions, and investors. The NSTC is designed to address the real-world technical challenges of the semiconductor industry and provide immediate and hands-on knowledge transfer and training to participants. Call for Nominations

As a first step, today the Department issued a Federal Register call for nominations to join a committee that will select a board of trustees for the new, independent, purpose-built non-profit that will operate the NSTC consortium. The Department seeks distinguished and experienced individuals to be responsible for the first step in creating this new organization to benefit the nation. Nominations will be accepted until 5 pm EST on May 10, 2023.
