August monthly crude oil and natural gas production

These monthly production estimates are based on data from the EIA-914, Monthly Crude Oil, Lease Condensate, and Natural Gas Production Report.

Natural Gas Monthly

• In June 2024, dry natural gas production decreased year over year for the fourth consecutive month. Preliminary dry natural gas production in June 2024 was 3,090 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 103.0 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 0.2% (0.2 Bcf/d) lower in June 2024 than in June 2023 (103.2 Bcf/d); despite this decrease, dry natural gas production was the second highest for the month since 1973, when we began tracking dry production. Gross withdrawals also decreased from June 2023:
  • Gross withdrawals: 3,737 Bcf for the month, or 124.6 Bcf/d
    
    • A 0.5% increase compared with June 2023 (124.0 Bcf/d)
      
    • The daily rate of gross withdrawals was the highest for the month since 1980, the earliest year in this data set
      

• Estimated natural gas consumption in June 2024 was 2,428 Bcf, or 80.9 Bcf/d
  • A 2.8% increase compared with June 2023 (78.8 Bcf/d)
    
  • The daily rate of natural gas consumption was the highest for the month since we began using the current methodology for consumption in 2001
    

• The year-over-year average daily rate of dry natural gas consumption in June 2024 decreased in two of the four consuming sectors, and it increased in the other two. Natural gas deliveries by consuming sector in June 2024 were:
  • Residential deliveries: 123 Bcf for the month, or 4.1 Bcf/d
    • A 4.7% decrease compared with June 2023 (4.3 Bcf/d)
    • Lowest daily rate of residential deliveries for the month since 2018
  • Commercial deliveries: 156 Bcf for the month, or 5.2 Bcf/d
    • A 4.7% increase compared with June 2023 (5.0 Bcf/d)
    • Highest daily rate of commercial deliveries for the month since 1973, the earliest year in this data set
  • Industrial deliveries: 653 Bcf for the month, or 21.77 Bcf/d
    • A 0.3% decrease compared with June 2023 (21.83 Bcf/d)
  • Electric power deliveries: 1,238 Bcf for the month, or 41.3 Bcf/d
    • A 5.3% increase compared with June 2023 (39.2 Bcf/d)
    • Highest daily rate of electric power deliveries for the month since we began using the current methodology for them in 2001
• Net natural gas imports (imports minus exports) were -379 Bcf, or -12.6 Bcf/d, in June 2024, making the United States a net natural gas exporter. The United States exported 2.5 times more natural gas than it imported in June 2024. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports in June 2024 were 8.5% higher than the daily rate of LNG exported in June 2023; the daily rate of LNG exports was the highest for the month since we began tracking LNG exports in 1997. In June 2024, the United States exported 11.9 Bcf/d of LNG to 38 countries. Natural gas imports and exports both increased year over year in June 2024:
  • Total imports: 247 Bcf for the month, or 8.2 Bcf/d
    • A 6.5% increase compared with June 2023 (7.7 Bcf/d)
    • Highest daily rate of natural gas imports for the month since 2012
  • Total exports: 626 Bcf for the month, or 20.9 Bcf/d
    • A 3.1% increase compared with June 2023 (20.2 Bcf/d)
    • Highest daily rate of natural gas exports for the month since we began tracking them in 1973
