Aerostar upgrades road to SJU cargo district

Feb 06, 2024

Aerostar Airport Holdings (Aerostar), a Board member of the Puerto Rico Life Sciences Air Cargo Community, has invested USD4.6 million in a new road connecting cargo facilities across Luis Muñoz Marín Airport (SJU), the island’s busiest freight hub.

The new road, which will be lit by solar-powered LED lamps, is part of ongoing investment at the airport, and across the island, which will help drive quality in the air cargo supply chain.

As part of this commitment, Aerostar has joined the Board of the PR Life Sciences Air Cargo Community, which brings together over 40 companies from across the pharma supply chain to improve cargo operations, and to act as the voice of the industry with legislators.

"The road improvements mark a crucial milestone in our ongoing commitment to elevate cargo operations at SJU,” said Varlín Vissepó, Executive of Cargo Operations at Aerostar.

“We are dedicated to providing a safer and more efficient environment for our cargo operators.

"Our investment ensures immediate benefits in terms of safety and efficiency, and also lays the foundation for additional improvements for the cargo community.”

The new road links Puerto Rico’s main Baldorioty Highway with SJU’s cargo district, replacing access, initially envisaged as temporary, with a state-of-the-art road system, including speed awareness measurements, which will not only make the road safer, but also reduce damage and wear and tear to vehicles.

Aerostar is installing new ULD Racks at SJU, which currently handles over 90% of air freight for the island, and is also in talks with a major freight operator with a view to developing new cold storage facilities in the cargo district, with work planned for later this year.

“Puerto Rico is the number one bioscience manufacturing hub in the U.S. by export volume, and the industry is looking to further expand,” said Adrián Dominicci, Executive Assistant of Strategic Sectors, Departamento de Desarrollo Económico y Comercio.

“As a world-leading pharma hub, Puerto Rico is focussed on providing world-class supply chain solutions.

“Aerostar’s investment, combined with the commitment of PR Life Science Air Cargo Community members, will ensure just that.”

PR Life Science Air Cargo Community will hold its 4th dedicated membership meeting on 28th February.
