Hong Kong Airport Reopens Runway Shut After Plane Skids in Rain

The Hong Kong International Airport reopened a runway that was closed temporarily after heavy rains caused a China Eastern Airlines Corp. jet to skid off the runway while landing. Operations on the north runway were restored at 12:40 p.m. local time, the airport said in an emailed statement Wednesday. The disabled aircraft, carrying 141 passengers and crew, was blocking the runway after the incident, city-based carrier Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., said in a statement earlier. Two passengers aboard China Eastern’s flight MU765 complained of discomfort and were sent to the hospital for a check-up, the airport said. Bad weather delayed more than 100 flights Wednesday as the Hong Kong Observatory raised its rainstorm warning signal to the highest level before subsequently lowering it to amber, the lowest of three alerts. Flight operations at Cathay now remain normal but the situation is subject to change, the airline said in an update on its website.
